ROLL
PREPARATION, CLEANING AND PACKAGING FOR EXPORT This procedure documents the methods used to prepare and
package finished forged steel rolls, for export
shipment. The entire roll surface is washed with solvent and completely dried. If necessary, the overhead crane is used to lift the roll into the air to wash and dry the underside of the roll.
Washing
and drying the roll.
Ensuring
the bottom of the roll is completely dry. The entire roll is coated with Ferrocote #673, (click here for MSDS) a Quaker Chemical product. The Ferrocote #673 is applied using a paint roller or paintbrush. To ensure thorough coverage the coating process is started from the underside of the roll.
Applying
Ferrocote #673 to the roll. After
the Ferrocote #673 is applied, the entire roll is then wrapped end to
end with VERSIL-PAK #3, (click here for
MSDS).
VERSIL-PAK #3 is a flexible, greaseproof, waterproof barrier, muslin
material. This muslin material is applied using a 2" to 4"
overlap.
Applying
muslin sheet on the roll body. (Note:
necks were already wrapped prior to the body.) After the muslin wrap is complete, a second coat of Ferrocote #673 is applied on top of the muslin wrap.
Applying
second coat of Ferrocote #673 on top of the muslin. The entire roll is wrapped with VCI, (click here for MSDS), protective paper allowing for 6-8" of overlap.
Wrapping
the body with VCI paper.
The VCI paper is pulled tight against the roll surface and secured with filament strapping tape, making sure to seal all seams, both horizontally and vertically.
Sealing
all seams with filament "strapping" tape.
All
journals or inner races are protected with a layer of Lamiflex, (click
here for MSDS). Lamiflex is a flexible composite of compression
resistant hardboard lath with a water-repellant outer skin. The
Lamiflex is wrapped around the circumference of the journal or inner
race and secured with filament strapping tape.
Lamiflex
applied to inner races. After
the roll has been packaged accordingly, the Shipper will inspect the
packaging and attach the roll certificate to the neck of the roll. The
certificate is sealed in a watertight plastic envelope to prevent
damage during shipping.
BOXING
THE ROLL The
top and bottom roll saddle blocks have a rubber
liner attached to the saddle blocks to protect the roll necks.
The
packaged roll is placed in the box with the journals resting on the
saddle blocks and wooden wedges are placed between the roll body wall
and the saddle. Wooden wedges are also placed at both ends of the roll
neck. A
rubber strap is placed on top of the journal and the top saddle block
is set in placed and secured to the box.
The
lid is placed on the box and nailed closed. Steel banding is placed
around the box and secured tightly. The
box is stenciled and marked as required by the shipping instructions.
Boxed
roll prior to lid installation.
CLEANING THE ROLL Once
the roll has been removed from the wooden container and the protective
Lamiflex,VCI paper and the VERSIL-PAK muslin materials are removed the
Ferrocote #673 coating can be easily removed with mineral spirits or
any solvent.
